HOW PEKOE TRAIL REVIVED SRI LANKAN TOURISM & ECONOMY?

Situation

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry—once a USD 5.6B powerhouse attracting 2.5 million visitors in 2018—had sharply declined following the 2021 economic crisis. As the country looked to rebuild, tourism wasn’t just an industry to revive—it was a national lever for recovery. While beaches and heritage sites were well-known, Sri Lanka’s hill country remained under-leveraged—rich in culture, nature, and history, yet largely undiscovered on the global stage.


Problem

How do you revive tourism in a post-crisis economy—not just by bringing visitors back, but by repositioning the country for the future?
